We are members of the helping professions who believe that a humanistic, person-centered approach to helping is the most powerful way of helping people develop and grow. This approach assumes a growth drive in all of nature where all parts capable of growth are in interaction with their environment. That interaction influences their growth, making life possible, and it influences the nature of their growth.

The Person-Centered Approach is the work of Carl R. Rogers, noted psychologist and philosopher of the twentieth century. Carl Rogers developed this as a theory of psychotherapy when he saw that imposing the mind, or thinking, of the therapist actually slowed the psychotherapeutic process. He proposed that trying to facilitate the inner growth drive of persons without directing them was by far more powerful, went deeper into persons' inner life, and was met with longer lasting changes, as persons discovered how to facilitate themselves in their own unique processes of growth. This higher priority of inner process over content is empowerment...and human encouragement.

Grace Harlow Klein Ph.D.

Grace Harlow Klein works with both individuals and groups as nurse, psychotherapist, life and career coach, teacher and consultant to organizations in both the for profit and non-profit sectors. Her focus on empowerment is directed toward clients regarding their health, to nurses in relation to their roles in today’s challenging health care environment and toward executives and organizations seeking to increase their success.

Grace received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Kansas, her master’s degree in community health nursing and her Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Maryland. She discovered Rogers’ writings during her studies in human development and became involved with Rogers and his work at the Center for Studies of the Person in LaJolla, California. She has been a community health nurse, university professor and academic administrator in nursing at three universities covering a span of forty-five years.

Grace developed the Empowering Nursing Workshop at Syracuse University College of Nursing with colleagues Armin Klein and Virginia Whitmire, RN, Ph.D. The workshops were offered to hundreds of students and practicing nurses, addressing both personal and professional issues. Students' learning led to their own empowerment, helping them with the challenges of today’s difficult health care environment. It also led to their empowerment of patients and clients with whom they worked.

She is a member of the American Academy of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, the New York State Nurses Association and the Association for the Development of the Person-Centered Approach.

Both poet and photographer, Grace has published three books of poetry related to loss, transition and empowerment. They are available for purchase along with her photography, at Grace Harlow Press. She is busy working on new volumes of poetry.
